"Trim my tree" can mean a dozen different things, and the right cut depends on what you're trying to fix — safety, health, light, or looks. Here's the full menu:
Selectively removing branches through the canopy so wind passes through instead of pushing against it, and sunlight reaches your lawn again. The tree keeps its shape — it just breathes better.
Lifting the canopy by removing lower limbs — clearance for the driveway, the roofline, the sidewalk, or just so you can mow without ducking.
Taking out the dead and dying branches before gravity does. In a region with our winters, deadwood over a driveway or play area isn't a cosmetic issue — it's the next windstorm's ammunition.
Branches resting on shingles, scraping siding, or growing into the service line. We create proper clearance with clean cuts that don't invite the growth right back.
The cheapest pruning you'll ever buy. Shaping a tree in its first 10–15 years prevents the weak, co-dominant limbs that cost thousands to deal with at year 40.
Crabapples, maples, fruit trees, and the front-yard showpieces — pruned for shape, bloom, and fruit, at the right time of year for each species.
Trees don't send reminders. They just keep growing until something — a gutter, a windstorm, a view — tells you they've gone too long. Watch for these:

Bare limbs in a leafed-out tree in July are dead, and they come down in the first serious wind — usually onto whatever's parked under them.
If your lawn died in the tree's shadow and the inside of the canopy is a tangle, the tree is overdue for thinning — dense crowns catch wind like a sail.
Two limbs grinding against each other wear open wounds into the bark — an open door for disease and rot.
A "hanger" caught in the canopy after a windstorm isn't stable. It's just waiting.
Tight, V-shaped unions are the weak points that split 20 years from now. Caught early, one cut fixes it.
Most mature shade trees around here do well on a 3–5 year trimming cycle. If you can't remember the last time, it's time.
Trimming is usually the most affordable work we do — a fraction of what removal costs, and it often prevents the removal bill entirely. What moves the price:
A 20-foot ornamental is ladder work; an 80-foot maple is a climbing or bucket job. Height drives time, and time drives price.
Three clearance cuts over the garage is one price. A full crown thinning on a mature shade tree is another.
A tree on a regular cycle trims quickly. A tree that's gone ten years untouched takes real work the first time — and much less every time after.
Open front yard versus fenced back corner over the neighbor's shed — the harder we have to work to get debris out, the longer the job runs.
Doing several trees in one visit is cheaper per tree than spreading them out. If you're on the fence about the second tree, ask — the bundled price usually settles it.
The promise: free written estimate, final number, no surprises — and if we think your tree needs less work than you called about, we'll say so. Ask about our seasonal discount of up to 20%.
We look at the tree with you, talk about what's bothering you — shade, clearance, that one branch — and explain what we'd cut and why. Written price before any saw starts.
Some cuts can happen any day of the year; others are better waited on. If your species and your goal mean the job should wait for dormancy, we'll tell you — even if it means booking you for February instead of this week.
Clean cuts at the branch collar, so the tree seals the wound itself. No stubs, no flush cuts, and absolutely no topping — the quick haircut that turns a healthy tree into a hazard within a few seasons.
Before we call it done, we step back and look at the tree the way you will every morning — balanced, natural, nothing missed over the roof or the line.
Every branch through the chipper, lawn raked, gates closed. The only evidence is more light on your lawn.
Some trimming can't wait for an appointment. Our emergency crew runs 24/7 across Boston, Hamburg, Eden, West Seneca, and Orchard Park — hanging limbs and storm-damaged branches handled before they become the bigger problem.
A homeowner in West Seneca contacted Boston Tree Services about a mature maple tree that had become overgrown over the years. Several branches had extended toward the roof, dense foliage was blocking sunlight from reaching the lawn, and a dead limb raised concerns about the safety of the surrounding yard.
The tree's dense canopy and accumulated deadwood required attention. Overhanging branches posed a concern for the nearby home, while the lack of sunlight was affecting the grass beneath the tree. Rather than automatically recommending complete removal, the situation called for a closer assessment to determine whether professional pruning could address the issues.
The Boston Tree Services team assessed the maple's condition and identified the branches that needed attention. We carried out selective pruning to remove dead and damaged limbs, reduce excessive canopy density, and provide better clearance around the roofline. We focused on maintaining the tree's natural shape while improving its overall structure and appearance.
The maple had a cleaner, more balanced canopy, with improved clearance around the home and less unwanted branch growth. The pruning also helped open up the space beneath the tree, allowing more light to reach the lawn. By focusing on targeted tree care rather than assuming removal was necessary, the homeowner had an opportunity to preserve a mature tree while addressing the property's concerns.
At Boston Tree Services, we believe the right solution starts with a proper assessment. If you have an overgrown maple or a tree with troublesome branches, contact our team to discuss your options. Or send us a photo through our contact form to get started.
Anyone with a saw can make a tree shorter. Making it healthier takes knowing what you're cutting. The big one to watch for:
We never top trees. Topping — hacking the main limbs down to stubs — is the fast, cheap "trim" some outfits still sell. It looks tidy for one season. Then the tree panics, throws out clusters of weak, fast-growing shoots at every stub, and within a few years you've got a taller, denser, more dangerous tree with rot working into every cut. Proper pruning works with the tree's structure; topping works against it. If a quote sounds too cheap, ask them where they make their cuts.
The tree seals them itself, no rot invitation.
The right season for the right tree, not whenever the truck's free.
Ask for our certificate of insurance; we hand it over before you ask twice.
Our work stands in yards all over this town, and so does our name.
Based in Boston, up in the hills off Route 391 — and trimming trees across southern Erie County every week. Same crew, same cuts, whichever town you're in.
Usually a few hundred dollars for a typical residential tree — far less than removal, and it scales with tree size, how much needs cutting, and access. Multiple trees in one visit lowers the per-tree price. The exact number comes from a free on-site estimate, in writing.
For most species, late winter — February into March — while trees are dormant. Cuts heal fast once spring growth starts, and disease pressure is at its lowest. That said, deadwood, hazards, and clearance problems can and should be handled any time of year.
In everyday use they overlap, but roughly: trimming is about shape, clearance, and appearance; pruning is about the tree's health and structure — removing dead, diseased, or competing branches so the tree grows stronger. Most jobs we do are both at once.
Done right, no — it's the best thing you can do for it. Done wrong (topping, flush cuts, taking too much at once), yes. As a rule, no more than about a quarter of a healthy crown should come off in one go, and every cut should be at the branch collar. That's how we work.
Generally, you're entitled to have branches over your property line trimmed back to it — but it has to be done without harming the tree, and a friendly heads-up to the neighbor goes a long way. We handle these regularly and can walk you through it at the estimate.
Most mature shade trees do well on a 3–5 year cycle; young trees benefit from a structural look every 2–3 years, and fast growers near the house may need attention more often. If you can't remember the last trim, that's your answer — call us at (716) 456-8833 and we'll take a look for free.
A trim this season is the cheapest insurance your trees will ever get — against storm damage, against a dead lawn, and against the removal quote that comes when a neglected tree finally fails. One call gets you an honest walk-through, a written price, and cuts your trees will be better for.
Book before the next lake-effect season — trimmed trees shed wind; overgrown ones catch it.
